Before doing these mods, I would never dream of cutting at any setting other than the highest setting / #6. But now, I cut on #4 or #5 because my deck is so much higher off the ground.

Oct 11, 2016 This is a Craftsman Rider made by MTD. Model 247-203700. It appears to be a rebranded Troybilt Pony / Model 700. The deck is way too low. Cutting grass at #3 deck height just scalps the lawn. I adjusted the front to raise it however stll too low. I moved the deck attachment to higher holes on the attachment brackets.

The reason is the lever has a spring that compensates for the weight of the deck. Lock the deck into the lowest position before you feel the tension. Then install the deck belt.

It is a model 917254631 which I got from a relative. To me it seems like it cuts to low. My regular push mower is set at about 3 or 3 and half inches from the ground to the blade. The riding mower has a lever to lift the deck up but it is a set height.

The maximum height is only 3 and that is on setting 6. Setting 1, 2 or 3 the deck pushes dirt.
